Today in Taiwan, Western Union1 cooperates with Cathay United Bank, Taishin International Bank, Chang Hwa Commercial Bank and King's Town Bank, in enabling a fast, convenient and reliable service. We have over 2002 Service Provider locations across Taiwan. And we're still growing. Outside of Taiwan, Western Union enables money transfer services through more than 334,0002 Agent locations in over 200 countries and territories worldwide. OUR HISTORY
We started off as a telegraph company, then Western Union successfully evolved into a global leader in money transfer services. The strength of our over 155-year old history is the foundation of our future growth.
TIMELINE
Western Union was established in 1851. Back then, it was called The New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. Only in 1856 did we change our name to The Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1871, the Western Union Money Transfer® service was introduced and became the company’s primary business.
And to top that off, we were the only company in the world to have 5 satellites in orbit in the year 1982. Then in 1992, we launched the Western Union Money OrderSM service that provides customers with fast and easy ways to get money.
By 1996, we unveiled our North America headquarters in Englewood, Colorado and new offices in Paris, Vienna and Hong Kong. Our meteoric rise continued when we were able to expand to 50,000 network locations across the world in 1998.
The new millennium proved to be a historic time for us as we launched our worldwide website, www.westernunion.com. And by 2005, under the leadership of our President of Western Union Financial Services, Christina Gold, we had more than 250,000 network locations (combined with Orlandi Valuta, our subsidiary) worldwide.
We completed our transformation in 2006 when we discontinued our historic telegram service. Western Union now works with different partners to offer you a variety of financial services with network coverage of over 310,0002 Overseas Agent locations worldwide. And we are still expanding to serve our millions of customers across the globe, and that includes you.
